Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” came out in 2013, the same year I ran away from home and started building a life of my own.
By the time “Melodrama” was released in 2017, I was already questioning everything I had built. My longest relationship was crumbling and my mental health was declining. I was unsure of which way to go.
I’m in a much better state now and things no longer seem as dark as they did. No wonder when I first heard Lorde sing, “Forget all the tears that you’ve cried / It’s over,” in “Solar Power,” my tears began to well up.
There’s no guarantee that darkness will never come back. But for now, I’ll enjoy the sun.
